Chris Stewart, Co-Director of the Learning Commons and Quantitative Reasoning Program Coordinator, decided that she wanted to be a mathematics teacher because she wanted everyone to understand how easy it really was, even though the teacher sometimes made it seem complicated - at least that's how she saw it at age 8. After studying Applied Mathematics at the University of St Andrews, she still felt much the same, and so qualified as a secondary school teacher. After several years of teaching in Scotland and England she moved to Vancouver with her husband Peter, and took the opportunity to gain a PhD in Mathematics Education from Simon Fraser University. This prompted a move into post-secondary teaching where she now helps the over 18s to see how easy mathematics really is! Although at times Chris has been tempted to pursue her passion for singing, she has always been unable to resist the pull of mathematics. Music, however, is a necessity, and so she is always looking for people with whom she can sing and play. When life becomes a little too hectic Chris and Peter escape to the hills - a few days of simply surviving can really put things back in perspective. |
