Venessa Wallsten, University Librarian, has been a professional in the field for over 10 years. After exploring careers in the technical and public library sectors, she returned to academia at the University of the Fraser Valley. When the opportunity to build a library for a new university presented itself, it was a project too unusual and exciting to pass up – so she picked up and moved hubby and house to Squamish and her new position with Quest.

Venessa completed her BSc specialising in Behavioural and Neuropsychology at the University of Alberta in 1995. In 2000, Venessa graduated with her Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) again from the University of Alberta and began her new career as a librarian, promptly moving to the West Coast and away from the cold, snowy Alberta winters.

In her 5 years at Quest, Venessa has overseen the selection and purchasing all of the Library collections, implementation of technical systems, hiring of staff, development and implementation of Library policies, space configuration of the facility, and the establishment of many of the programs and services currently offered to students and staff. Time has flown quickly… What do the next 5 years hold? Hopefully more of the same! It's been a challenge and a joy to get the Library to this level of operations, and all further additions, extensions and experiments are encouraged and welcome.

It's probably not a surprise that one of Venessa's favourite hobbies is reading: foreign mysteries, science fiction and historical nonfiction are her current favourites. Ink drawing, gardening and building intricate house floorplans with Lego are just a few of her other interests. Currently, she is slowly converting her backyard lawn to raised vegetable beds and endeavouring to keep raccoons and her German Shepherd puppy, Hudson, out of the goldfish pond.

If Venessa had a Question, it would be something like "How does the understanding of information and information theory augment student literacies?"
