Rob Knop obtained a PhD from Caltech in 1997, making infrared observations of active galaxies with the Palomar 5m Telescope. In 1996, he joined the Supernova Cosmology Project, and was deeply involved with the 1998 discovery that the expansion of our Universe is accelerating. After a six-year stint as an assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy at Vanderbilt University, he worked for two years as a computer engineer at Linden Lab, the company that produces the virtual world Second Life. To this day, he regularly gives public outreach astronomy lectures in virtual worlds. When not teaching, working on cosmology and interacting galaxies, and figuring out how to use virtual worlds for scientific collaboration and education, Rob is an amateur violinist and violist, and an amateur dramatist. He's played in string quartets and community orchestras, and has also acted in and directed productions with community theaters. |
