A Spanish native, Helena Talaya-Manso received two Bachelor's Degrees - in Education and Catalan Language - as well as a Master's Degree in Art History, from the University of Valencia. She recently completed her Doctoral Studies in the Hispanic Department at the University of Houston with a specialization in contemporary Spanish Peninsular Cultural Studies. Her dissertation explores the legacy of the Madrid Movida, a cultural renaissance in post-Franco Spain that took place during the 1980's at the end of the dictatorship. Her research focuses on Contemporary Spain and the interdisciplinary works that represented a radical rupture with the traditional cultural Spanish paradigm. She studies different kinds of literary and visual texts - films, comics, photography, fashion, and publicity. Helena has taught a range of Spanish Language and Culture courses to high-school and college-age students for the past 20 years, most recently at Colorado College. She has presented lectures in symposiums of literary studies in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the United States. She actively promotes Spanish culture, organizing concerts and film showings. She has traveled extensively with students abroad. Encouraging her students to travel to Spain and Latin America is always a goal of hers. She is excited to become a member of the Quest community! |
