Visiting Tutor for "Special Topics in Molecular Bio" Jenn's curiosity about the natural world drives her passion for learning. From her academic and field experiences in aquatic ecology and environmental studies, to her personal expeditions up mountains, down rivers, through forests and under oceans, she has acquired a deep appreciation for biology. Jenn completed her masters of science in the Pacific Salmon Ecology Lab at the University of British Columbia. Her research focused on how the early development stages of Fraser River sockeye salmon are affected by thermal stress. She holds a bachelor's degree in environmental science from McGill, where her studies focused on the ecological aspects of human health, environmental policy, and indigenous protected areas. Jenn has worked for several Vancouver environmental NGOs. She has done community mapping with the Georgia Strait Alliance, reviewed protected areas ecological monitoring for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, and coordinated invertebrate biology and conservation education programs at the Vancouver Aquarium. Jenn threads her passion for teaching through all of her experiences. As a result of the creativity and energy she put into her courses at UBC on fish and forestry interactions and amphibian ecology, she was awarded the Killam Graduate Teaching Award in 2011. Jenn has also been involved in science education outreach through programs such as 'Let's Talk Science' and 'Science 101,' where UBC educators teach science workshops in Vancouver's downtown eastside. When she is not working, Jenn is outdoors rock climbing, mountaineering, back-country skiing, and scuba diving. Jenn has led bike tours and kayak tours that have taken her across Eastern Canada, over the hills of Scotland, through the French countryside, and along the rocky shores of B.C.'s Central Coast and Haida Gwaii. |
