Visiting Tutor for "Doing Math Through History" John Hannah often feels like a reluctant nomad. He was born in England but he emigrated as a child, firstly to Australia and then to New Zealand. He discovered that he liked teaching during his final year at high school. After doing a PhD in mathematics at the University of Canterbury, he has taught mathematics at universities in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. His original research interests were in abstract algebra but he has also taught courses in calculus, differential equations, numerical methods and mathematical modelling. More recently he has become interested in mathematics education and in the history of mathematics. A unifying theme in his recent work has been an attempt to understand how people actually do mathematics. How do they discover new results? How do they convince other people that new results are true, or that new methods work? He has built these themes into a history of mathematics course which he helps to teach at the University of Canterbury. |
