Cornerstone

The Cornerstone block is the first course that all students take upon entering Quest. Section sizes are limited to 20 students each, and they are taught by faculty members who may also serve as the students' academic advisors for their first four terms (or 16 blocks). The topic of our Cornerstone is "Human Beings and Nature," and it is designed to encourage broad critical thinking about our relation to our environment. The faculty have collectively designed the course to incorporate the insights and methods of a number of disciplines, including art, literature, theology, political philosophy, mathematics, environmental science, and earth science. Students will learn about the origins of various ideas of nature, and about scientific models of nature, but also engage directly in field research and outdoor activities in the spectacular natural surroundings of our campus.

The Cornerstone block is not simply a first course in a traditional field of study but, rather, a preparation for the unique educational journey provided by Quest. This essential building block serves as:

  • an introduction to the fast-paced and intensive one-block-at-a-time curriculum model;
  • an orientation to the requirements of university-level study;
  • an immersion in the multidisciplinary and integrative approach to learning that is a hallmark of a Quest education;
  • a catalyst for thought and engagement with important concepts;
  • an introduction to the range of knowledge and skills students develop throughout their studies at Quest;
  • a model for inquiry-based learning and questioning;
  • a basis for university-level writing, speaking, and research.
